AH-64D Longbow Apache
(Revell - Nr. 04896)
Revell offers this time an Apache in the attractive colour scheme of the 100 years military aviation in the Netherlands anniversary. This airftaft with Indian feathers could be admired at the 2013 Luchtmachtdagen at Volkel AB. The RNLAF operates 29 Apaches in total with 301. Sqn at Gile-Rijen AB. Regularly, an Apache will be used as a solo demo aircraft on displays at airshows.
Despite being almost 30 years old, the basic kit from Monogram can still be considered to be a cheaper alternative to the more recent Hasegawa kits. The overall appearance is okay, although the plastic appears to be a bit chunly and some work will be neccessary to remove little amounts of flash. Some delicate parts like the chin cannon can be improved with some scratched enhancements. To make a D out of the basic kit, Revell added the additional sprue with recessed detail from their 2004 issue. This sprue with a somewhat more crisp detail includes the lower fuselage fairings and new cockpit instument panels with CRT screens which have unforunately sink holes in it.
Highlight of this boxing is the large decalsheet desinged by Syhart Decal. It contains most of the colour gradients for the scheme so that masking is reduced to a minimum. But the instructions are a bit confusing here. Construction step 64 shows the painting to be done. Step 66 shows it as well but with some different lines to be masked. I consider step 64 to be more correct here. As the decals are large and provide the major parts of the scheme, an appropriate decal softener is a must here. Due to the complex colour scheme and decaling, the kit is not suitable for the beginner.
What the modeller gets is basically the 1986 Monogram Apache. Kits of this series are commonly known for an acceptable level of detail and correct dimensions and shape. This basis is upgraded by specific AH-64D parts which were more recently produced for the 2004 Longbow issue. Surely, a decent model can be built out of that kit with good craftmanship. The full-blown Apache fan will probably try to adapt the decals to the Hasegawa kit.
