Eurocopter EC 145 Medstar/ Police
(Revell - Nr. 04648)
In 2008, Revell stopped the production of their previously released versions of the 1:32 EC-145 (ADAC/ Sécurité Civile and Rega) suddenly although the kit was released only two years before. But soon it became clear that another version of this kit will surely follow. Me and some other Helo Guys immediately thought about an US Army UH-72. But surprisingly, however Revell's representants told me once that civil helos are often slow sellers and a kind of risk, they came again with a civil version.
This time, decals for the MEDSTAR Helicopter of Lee County, Florida are included. Moreover, another option is "Ibis 2" of the State Police Helicopter Squadron of Hessen, Germany. The sheet is comprehensive and has a high printing quality. Unfortunately, the original Medstar N911LZ ditched into the Intracoastal Waterway near Upper Captiva Island, FL in August 2009 and was a total loss. Nevertheless, the crew of three was able to escape sucsessfully. Now they are operating with BO-105 again. For those who are astonished about the radio frequency on the German Police option: These markings were carried during the soccer world championship and the european championship when German a/c were borrowed from Austria and Switzerland for airspace surveillance purposes. After these events, the frequencies remained in some police squads on some a/c.
As far as plastic parts are concerned, you get the parts which are known from former issues of the Kit. Lots of universal Parts are not needed an fill up the spares box. There are so many srues and parts (191 pcs.) that they fill up the cardbord box up to the top. Once you got them all out of the box, it seems to be almost impossible to put them into the box again in a satisfactory way.
Revell did again the easy way with this reissue but the devil is in the details. Revell ignored the outside oxygen tanks between the vertical skid tubes for the Medstar option. The medical interior is nicely detailed, but has its origin in the German ADAC version. The Aircraft used by Lee County has a completely different medical interior kit, produced by American company. The SX-5 search light mounted beneath the pilots door is also missing.
For the Police version, there is no specified interior like a FLIR- operatror workstation or something. Although the instrcution sheet makes a difference between "Police Transport", "Police" and "Police Rescue"- Configuration, it is very unlikely for endurance reasons that rescue hoist, FLIR and SX-16 are all mounted at the same time. Furthermore, the FLIR provided in the kit is in use with some EC-135 of other German Police Squads but Hessen uses a different FLIR model.
Considering the high prices at Ebay (especially in Germany) we have to thank Revell for the reissue of this well engineered kit. And the minor errors? Let's turn a blind eye to them...
