MAW Decals - Leatherneck Featherweights

Hersteller:MAW Decals
Theme:Utility Helicopters
Productnumber:48-MAW005 - Leatherneck Featherweights
Type:Full kits
Year of release:November 2006

Here is my review of 48-MAW005 Leatherneck Featherweights released by MAW Decals in November 2006. It is currently still available for $11.

The set contains one decal sheet with complete markings for 2 Twin Hueys and one Whiskey Cobra in service with the USMC. The first UH-1N is assigned to  HMM-263 (Rein) "The Thunderchickens". The second Twin Huey and the AH-1W are both flying for HMLA-167 "The Warriors"  based at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River, North Carolina.

The decal sheet is printed by Microscale. The individual decals themselves look very thin, crisp and the smallest letters of the stencils are still readable on my sheet. Here is a close up of a few decals that shows the excellent quality of the sheet.

Is everything 100% perfect? No, there is just a small problem with the alignment of the red layer. This affects the only 2 decals containing red color, they are the "checkerboard" markings for the UH-1N of HMLA-167 "The Warriors". On the close-up you see that there is a very small vertical imperfection of around 0,5mm. This is however very easy to correct using a sharp knife. It is just the red layer, the yellow layer used for the formation lights is as you can see in perfect register.

Here is a detailled overview of the 3 aircrafts that can be build:

  • UH-1N Huey, BuNo. 159194, HMM-263 (Rein) "The Thunderchickens", 24th MEU, May 2004
  • UH-1N Huey, BuNo. 160438, HMLA-167 "The Warriors", April 2005
  • AH-1W Super Cobra, BuNo. 160804, HMLA-167 "The Warriors", February 2006

    Instruction sheets

The instructions are printed in full color and provide clear information for the placement of the decals. Painting guides for the two tone tactical paint scheme is provided in Federal Standard (FS-35237 and FS-36375). As you can see below the instructions include 2 side views, a top and a bottom view of each helicopter.

Next to the instructions you also get a list with the recommended kits and additional aftermarket stuff that might help you to bring the kits up to your desired standard.

Based on the quality of the printing, the amount of markings included and the correct price I can only recommend these decals.
