Review:

MAW Decals released in March 2009 this new decalsheet in scale 1/35 covering US Marine Corps November Hueys. It contains markings and stencils for three USMC UH-1N Twin Hueys painted in the two tone tactical paint scheme (FS-35237 and FS-36375).

Decals

It contains one sheet that is printed by Cartograf . The quality of the decals is just excellent. All decals have a very thin carrier and come with very fine and crisp details. Even smaller letters of the stencils ("HAND HOLD", "NO PUSH", "BATTERY VENT",...) are still readable.

Here is a detailled overview of the 3 Twin Hueys that can be build:

  • UH-1N, HMM-263 (rein) "The Thunderchickens", BuNo 159194, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, May 2004
  • UH-1N, HML/A-167 "The Warriors", BuNo 160438, April 2005
  • UH-1N, HML/A-167 "The Warriors", BuNo 160459, February 2006

Note: The first two subjects should sound familiar for those who know their decalsheet MAW005 Leatherneck Featherweights in scale 1/48.

Danger "Jet Intake" - "Jeet Intatake"

Closely examining the quality of the decals I first thought I noted on the two triangular "Danger Jet Intake" decals of option number 3 (The Warriors - 160459) an imperfection. But I was wrong, this is not a flaw but was done on purpose. Smile

The original 160459 must have had a replacement part from another chopper where these markings started a few inches earlier. MAW decals took this into account. If you now paint and weather this replacement part slightly different than the rest of the chopper you will get an interesting model!

Instructions

The instructions are printed in full color and provide clear information for the placement of the decals. As you can see below the instructions include 2 side views,

The instructions are printed in full color and provide information for the placement of the decals. Painting guides for the two tone tactical paint scheme is provided in Federal Standard (FS-35237 and FS-36375). What I do miss are the small numbers next to the decals.

Kits

Intended kit is the (ex-Panda) Dragon Bell UH-1N Gunship (3540) together with the Cobra Company resin sets "35012 UH-1N Fleet Upgrade" and "35013 USMC UH-1N weapons".

Conclusion

It was definitely worth waiting for these first aftermarket decals for the Twin Hueys in scale 1/35. The decals with product number 35-MAW001 are sold for the price of $11.99.
