Aérospatiale SA-319 Alouette III
by Maik Heitsch (1:72 Heller)
In the year 1974, the police air wing of the State Police of Lower Saxony (Polizeihubschrauberstaffel Niedersachsen) introduced a single SA-319 Alouette III with Astazou engine into service to accompany their existing two Alouette IIs and Gazelle. First, the helicopter was based at Hannover-Langenhagen Airport, but soon then, the Alouette III became a fixed member of the second police air wing base at Oldenburg with the radio call sign "Phoenix 92". In 1996, the aircraft was taken away from active service and stripped down. The remainder of the airframe was sold as spares to Switzerland.
Heller released a special series of kits in the late 1980s for the German, Swiss and Austrian market. There was a series of their 1:50 helicopters with German civil markings and also a series of 1:72 fixed wing aircraft with German military markings. Among the latter, there was also this Alouette III kit. The major kit was built from the box. I added some wiring at the gearbox/engine section, cabin steps and antennae.
