AH-6J Little Bird

by Austin Kennedy (1:72 Italeri)

AH-6J Little Bird

The base kit is the AH-6A "Night Fox" kit from Italeri. I added a lot of details including a new instrument panel, an auxiliary fuel tank, ammo can and a weapons plank. The miniguns came from other Italeri kits while the rocket pods were scratch built from brass tube and PE. The ammo chutes were from ArmyCast's minigun set.

The pilots were from the Hasegawa AH-1F kit. The painting was done with Tamiya NATO black and weathered with dark greys and blacks. The decals came from Wolfpak decals. I tried, but it was tough to capture the variance in color because playing with the flash and exposure would wash out other details. The vehicle is a UAZ-469 from MAC. I modified it a little by building the rear frame and draping tissue paper soaked in white glue to replace the tarp.

The steel wire superglued under the hood is disguised as the skid for the AH-6J so it gives the appearance that the little bird "sits" on the hood of the car. To counteract the weight of the helicopter, I added lead weights to the back of the UAZ. The figures are slightly modified Caeser Miniatures. The scene was inspired from one of the opening scenes from Black Hawk Down. This is my second 160th diorama and I will complete the trio with my MH-47 diorama.
